Why Everything Hurts (And It’s Not Just Your Age… or Your Oestrogen)

Why Everything Hurts (And It’s Not Just Your Age… or Your Oestrogen)

There’s a very specific kind of frustration that comes with a body that just… won’t cooperate.

You’re doing the things. You stretch, you go to Pilates, you take the magnesium, you foam roll like a committed adult. And yet your shoulder still nags, your Achilles has opinions, and your hip feels like it’s aged faster than the rest of you.

So naturally, we look for something to blame. Usually it’s hormones. Oestrogen gets a fair run. Age gets thrown in there too.

And look, hormones and age absolutely play a role. As we get older, recovery isn’t quite as forgiving and tissues don’t bounce back the way they used to.

And I’m not throwing oestrogen under the bus. She’s definitely involved.

But she’s not always the main character in this story. And this is where we zoom out and look at the bigger picture.

The Real Plot Twist: Stress Is Running the System

Not just big, dramatic stress (although that plays a part).

I’m talking about the constant mental load, the running to-do list in your head, being “on” all the time, and that low-grade tension that never fully switches off.

Your body doesn’t distinguish between “I’ve got too much on” and “something is chasing me”. It just responds. So even if you feel like you’re “just busy”, your body may still be in a stress response. And that response shifts your entire physiology.

When Stress Becomes the Background Noise

Stress isn’t just a feeling - it’s a full-body biochemical state.

Over time, it changes how your body uses nutrients, alters how tissues repair, increases low-grade inflammation, and reduces your ability to recover. Instead of being in a state of repair and rebuilding, your body moves into cope, conserve, and get through the day.

And when your body is in that mode, it’s not prioritising healing - it’s prioritising getting you through.

Why Your Body Feels Tight, Sore and Slow to Recover

One of the biggest shifts is that your repair system gets dialled down. Under chronic stress, the body simply doesn’t prioritise rebuilding in the same way. Collagen production drops, healing slows, and those little niggles that should resolve… don’t.

This is often the missing piece - it’s not that you’re doing anything wrong, it’s that your body doesn’t currently have the capacity to repair properly.

At the same time, stress burns through nutrients at a much faster rate. Magnesium is a big one, which is why you see more muscle tightness, increased pain sensitivity, headaches, poor relaxation, and that classic “wired but tired” feeling.

So even if you’re taking supplements, we need to make sure your body can actually utilise them - not just take them.

Inflammation also shifts - but not in the way most people think. You need inflammation to heal, but chronic stress creates a low-grade, ongoing version that doesn’t resolve anything. It just sits there in the background contributing to stiffness, soreness, and that vague feeling that your body isn’t quite right.

Then there’s the nervous system itself. When it’s under constant pressure, it becomes more sensitive. Small niggles feel bigger, normal tension feels like pain, and things take longer to settle.

So part of the work is not just physical - it’s helping the nervous system feel safe enough to settle again.

The “Doing Everything Right” Trap

This is where a lot of people get stuck.

They add more supplements, try more strategies, more therapists, push a bit harder, thinking the answer is doing more. But if the underlying state is still stress and dysregulation, the body can’t fully utilise what’s being added.

It becomes more input… without better output.

So instead of asking “what else can I add?”, we start asking “what can I simplify or support more effectively?”

The Part We Don’t Talk About Enough

Stress isn’t just physical.

It’s emotional, social, and relational. Feeling overwhelmed, unsupported, or disconnected all feeds into the same physiological pathways. Humans regulate better together, not in isolation - and your body knows that.

So connection, support, and feeling safe in your environment are not extras — they are part of the treatment.

So… Is It Your Hormones?

Sometimes.

But more often, what I see is a system that hasn’t had a proper exhale in a very long time, and a body that’s trying to keep up without the conditions it needs to repair.

And that’s something we can work with.

What Actually Helps

This is where we simplify. Not strip everything back to nothing, but remove the excess and the conflict.

It becomes less about adding more, and more about supporting the nervous system, restoring nutrient foundations, creating space for recovery, and building consistency instead of intensity.

We’re not trying to push the body harder - we’re helping it function better.

And sometimes, the most powerful shift is simply doing less - but doing it properly.

The Takeaway

If your body feels sore, stiff, or like it’s not bouncing back the way it used to, it may not be your age, your hormones, or that you haven’t found the right supplement yet.

It may simply be that your system is under-resourced, over-signalled, and overdue for real recovery.

And once we support that properly, things often start to shift.

Final Thought

Remember, your body is not failing you, it's adapting beautifully to the environment it’s been given.

The goal isn’t to fight it. It's to give it a better environment to respond to. And when we do that, it tends to meet us halfway.
